Lviv – Carpathians – Bukovina – Podilia

Day 1

We begin our acquaintance with Western Ukraine in Lviv, the cultural capital of Ukraine and the capital of Galicia, once a small kingdom that currently straddles the border between Poland and Ukraine. After a short break, we start discovering this amazing and fabulous city. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Lviv is one of the most picturesque cities in Europe. While exploring the city on foot, we will have a chance to experience its rich versatility of architectural styles embodied in the historical churches and houses.

Day 2

Rarely can we find a place frozen in time. Lviv offers an opportunity to look back at its history with a lot of nationalities contributing to the development of the city. Discovering the city center on foot, you will get acquainted with the versatility of architectural styles implemented in historical
churches and houses, you will visit the Armenian and the Jewish quarters and the famous Opera House. In the afternoon you will be visiting Lychakiv Cemetery and find out more about the distinguished personalities who were writing the history of the city.

Day 3

In the morning we drive to Halych, the former centre of Galicia-Volyn principality, — the most powerful stronghold in the ancient south-western lands. The town of Halych, located in western Ukraine, gave name to the whole region of Galicia. The town is also known for the Karaite communitywhich has had its roots here since 13th century. Karaism is a movement in Judaism, a mixture of Jewish, Christian and Islamic religions. You will visit Karaite history and culture museum, where you will get a closer look at the features of life and traditions of the mysterious Halych Karaites, who are no longer presented in the region. Then we go to the Karaite cemetery, one large, wide and solemnly sad monument to the little people of the big community. From Halych we drive to Yaremche, where we will visit Hutsuls – an ethno-culturalgroup which inhabits the Carpatian Mountains – and have there a Hutsul traditional dinner.

Day 4

Depart Lviv for the Carpathian Mountains. First stop at the old town of Drohobych, formerly the centre of the salt industry. Visit the two 17th century wooden churches of St.George and Exaltation of the Cross, followed by a walk through the historic town centre to Rynok Square, the town hall and the ruined synagogue. Continue into the foothills of the Carpathians, stopping at the Monastery of Hoshiv on the way. Then cross the Carpathians to Mizhhiria and stay 2 nights at the Hotel in the mountains.
