Carpathians Ukraine

During this trip you will feel the inimitable atmosphere of the region and get acquainted with local people, who are still cherishing the old values. On these days you not only get acquainted with the prominent city of Lviv and its hinterlands, but will also have a possibility to enjoy the marvelous nature of Transcarpathian region – this sun drenched region, which will amaze you with its enchanting mountain rivers and lakes, waterfalls and an incredibly nice people.

Day 1

We begin our acquaintance with Western Ukraine in Lviv, the cultural capital of Ukraine and the capital of Galicia, once a small kingdom that currently straddles the border between Poland and Ukraine. After a short break, we start discovering this amazing and fabulous city. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Lviv is one of the most picturesque cities in Europe. While exploring the city on foot, we will have a chance to experience its rich versatility of architectural styles embodied in the historical churches and houses.

Day 2

Lviv, Lvov, Lwów, Lemberg, Leopolis – with its Ukrainian, Polish, Russian and German background, Lviv is many cities in one city, and with a rich architectural heritage reflecting all legacies.
The entire old town centre is now UNESCO World Heitage listed, centred on two magnificent square: Svoboda Square, dominated by the Opera House, and Rynok Square, the old medieval market square. We spend the full day sightseeing in Lviv.

Day 3

Depart Lviv for the Carpathian Mountains. First stop at the old town of Drohobych, formerly the centre of the salt industry. Visit the two 17th century wooden churches of St George and Exaltation of the Cross, followed by a walk through the historic town centre to Rynok Square, the town hall and the ruined synagogue. Continue into the foothills of the Carpathians, stopping at the Monastery of Hoshiv on the way. Then cross the Carpathians to Mizhhiria and stay 2 nights at the Hotel Kamyanka in the mountains.

Day 4

The next few days experiencing the Hutsul culture of the Carpathians. First travel through eastern Transcarpathia along the Romanian border and back up into the mountains. On the way visit two more wooden churches at Sokernitsa & Krai Nikova near Khust. Stop at the Austro-Hungarian monument marking the geographical centre of Europe near Dilove. Continue to Kosiv in the mountains to stay 2 nights in the Mayetok Sokilske, a resort hotel in the mountains.

In the morning visit the colourful Hutsul market of local handicrafts and produce in Kosiv. Then to Verkhovyna to visit the extraordinary private museum of traditional musical instruments, assembled by a local musician. We will be shown around by the musician’s daughter. In the afternoon there will be some leisure to enjoy the mountain scenery near the resort.
